NWACC Class Was Fun And Y'All Did Great Work

To contact us Click HERE

Good morning friends.  Yesterday was class one for our May Jewelry made simple, and we began with earrings.

Amazing class.  Lots of talent, and many new things to learn to make wire wrapping more interesting and easy to do.  As you  see in pictures,  many produced 4 and more pairs of earrings, all different in color and style.
My husband, Greg does all the photography so everyone can show off their original work.  There is exilaration as we see new items, and ideas work out.

Next week we will work with necklaces, bracelets, rings and pendants.  More fun!

The final week will include repairing jewelry in our boxes that is not worn, and work with wire.

We really enjoyed class yesterday, and really that is the most important attribute of having a hobby.  We are all learning to make the most of pieces we have.  Adding to the collection is always fun.

I'm on my way to "All strung Out" to get new beads to feature in our work next week. Alberto and Jeff go to great lengths to provide us with special focal beads and needs for our work.

See you all next week!

Why the Price of a Gallon of Gasoline is an indicator of How High Communal Anxiety Is

To contact us Click HERE
As one who has been studying Bowen Family Systems Theory for about 14 years now I am usually on the watch for "triggers" of anxiety.  Maybe signs of anxiety getting ready to move through a system is more of what I'm thinking about right now.  At any rate, ever notice how it seems that when things are going swimmingly well all around, someone will bring up the price of a gallon of gasoline?  Doesn't matter how old they are or how young they are. . . they blurt it right out and we all just nod our heads in assent!

In good old Lutheran fashion, I ask, "What does this mean?"  "Vas ist das?"

In the church, as we are brainstorming what God is calling us to do next with our time, our talents and gifts, our particular passions, building space and location, human-being power, and resources (as we all do in church around those strategic planning meetings and council sessions) eventually the caveat comes . . . loud and clear it is iterated. . . make no mistake, it means something, "Did you hear that the price of gas is up to $3.59!"  That's what it was at the Marathon as well as the BP station I passed while shuttling my brood back and forth today through the snow to their extracurricular events. $3.59!  Well, I guess that it's better than the $4+ a gallon of a while back.  That really stank, didn't it?!  But it's not quite as good as a few weeks ago when it dipped under three bucks a gallon for a quick minute.

But let's think about this rationally (is that is okay to do?):
Gas has been hovering around $3.29 or $3.39 lately so to fill my stupid gas hog, idiotic Chevy Trailblazer (we have issues that go beyond gasoline, she and I) it costs about 65-70 dollars for 20 gallons.
To be precise, if gas is $3.29 it costs me $65.80 to fill up.  If it is on the high end at $3.59 then we are talking $71.80.  That is a difference of $6.  Six dollars in a week.   Cause for alarm?  I'm not so sure.  What do you waste six dollars on each and every week and don't even think a thing about it? A Cafe Latte or two? A deliciously unhealthy Big Mac Meal?  A Subway sub and chips?  Maybe, a pack of Marlboro Lights?  Or a six pack of beer?  Come on, be honest now.  What is it?

But. . . when gas gets to a certain threshold per gallon, I'm sure quite what that number is. . . we gasp in shock and horror!  Anxiety ripples through the room!  Oh no, what will we do?  (Now I know my critics will say, "Yes but all of life is connected, you said so yourself a million times, and if gas goes up then so does everything else."  But we don't notice "everything else." We don't show up at church and say, "Bread is now $2.99 a loaf!" Gasp! Cough! Choke!)  It's only gasoline that does this to us! How can gasoline have so much emotional power over us?  How can we allow BP, Sunoco and Marathon make us FEEL this anxious?

And just an aside. . .I haven't seen too many people carpooling it to church to save on gas!  For that matter I haven't seen too many people doing without just to save for the trip to the Marathon.  It's simply a matter of expressing our collective anxiety over things that we cannot control. That's what I think it means when we say, "Did you see the price of gas is now $3.59?"  Whoa!  It is our way of conveying our anxiousness over lots of things we cannot control.

By the way, "Did you see the price of kosher salt?  It's $1.19 now!"  Just kidding. . . it's still around a dollar a box and by the way it's the best salt for cooking, bar none!

So relax.  Take a deep breath.  Put it all in perspective.  And don't let the oil moguls ramp up your anxiety by talking about rising gas prices.  Have a mochachino and be on your merry way!  God bless!

Puree, wainscot, begonia- one mistake and you're out!

My daughter has been "into" this spelling bee thing for three years now.  She is only ten and has some success with it thus far.  I am her main study buddy which makes it all the more nerve wracking for me to see her on stage spelling words such as rendezvous, voortrekker, mukhtar and soliloquy.  The awful thing about spelling bees is that one false move and you're out!  No second chances.  Just a trip to the back row to wait for others to make a mistake and join you.

Here is Miss Anna at the Huron County Bee before she experienced a devastating loss.  Okay, she's only ten give her a break!  The good news is that previous to that competition she qualified for the Regional Bee which will be in Athens, Ohio in March.  So you win some, you bomb some!  That's life and we are learning to deal with it together.

But here's the thing I'm grateful for (among many other things in life). . . this discipleship journey is not just one wrong letter and you're out!  As if you have to be able to handle every single thing that comes your way without having any previous experience with it at all!  The word that knocked her out was a word she hadn't heard before. . . puree. . . she gave it a French ending because it is French and she learned one of the rules of French is to put an et at the end of some words.  Nice try.  Incorrect though.  It happens.  She gave it her best educated guess but it was not right anyway.  Life is like that, right? We do our best under each new circumstance that comes our way; we put into action what we know from previous experience and learning. . . and even then sometimes we fail.  The good news is that Christ is still with us!  Picking us up, dusting us off, setting us back on the journey of faith.

Thank you God for the reality of this life in Jesus Christ that reminds us daily, moment by moment, that for us who love you, who give you our lives, it is not one false move and we're out!  It's just way too much pressure!  It keeps us all stirred up inside to think that we have to be perfect. . . and we simply cannot be perfect no matter how hard we try!  Your great love for us allows us to stumble and fall,  learn and grow through our failures to the fullness of what you have called us to be- your beloved children.

I hope I will have better news for you on March 10th about how Miss Anna does in Athens.  Her goal is to make it through five rounds.  She might be out on the first round like she was in the finals in Columbus last year (begonia of all things!  She knew that one but got a bit rattled!).  But maybe I won't have any good news to share, other than the fact that Jesus will still love her no matter if she spells the words correctly or not, and so will her mama and daddy!

I've Been Called An Overachiever Before. . . Imagine That!

My Webster's Dictionary on my Mac's Desktop defines overachiever as one who is "excessively dedicated to achieving success in one's work."  I'm not sure then that overachiever is the right word to pin on me.  I think a better moniker would be incessant fidget.  I simply cannot sit still!  I certainly have not achieved "success" in the standard measurement of success.  By the world's standards I have failed to live up to my potential.  Just ask any of my fellow pastors who serve larger congregations who have nailed me down by saying, "You're wasting your potential," or "You're wasting your gifts."  Especially now that I am no longer in the ELCA but in the North American Lutheran Church I have heard that battle cry that I have wasted my potential.  Ouch.

To be sure, I have given up on any measure of status in my former denomination.  Many cannot understand why I did what I did, why I led my flock the way I led them.  A couple of handfuls of colleagues no longer speak to me, want nothing to do with me.  Truth is, I'm still the same Amy I always was, haven't changed- I think they just weren't paying attention or didn't want to hear what I was saying all along.  So, I guess I've given up some great potential (whatever that means). . . but perhaps it was just a dream that others had for me, and not the path that God put me on.  I hope that's the case, otherwise I have wasted a whole lot of time in prayer, confession, grief, and worship.  It's strange because folks who wanted nothing to do with me before are now walking toward me, meanwhile long time friends are walking away.  It's kind of like that in the church and in life isn't it?  A revolving door of relationships. . . it just keeps rolling around on the tracks and people jump in and out of the spaces between the glass.

Success. . . isn't it supposed to look different in the church?  If pastor's wanted to be successful then they should go and work in the business world where they can make more money, have more prestige, travel to lovely places for conferences that are paid for by the companies they work for. . . instead we serve small communities with all their frailties, fall in love with the people there (don't be funny-you know what I mean!), sit by their bedsides, talk to them in the late hours of the night when things are going wrong, adopt their children as our own, spend our own money for breakfasts, lunches, dinners and craft projects.  Success, it ain't all it's cracked up to be!  (Sorry Grandma Mildred, I had to use that word ain't-- she used to said, "Ain't ain't a word and I ain't going to say it."  Ooops I said it again!)

The other thing about this is that I don't remember Jesus ever promising us "success."  I would think that folks in the church would understand that!  And for the record. . . I don't think I'm wasting anything!  Please stop saying that to me, it only means that YOU think I'm not living up to YOUR expectations.  Tell it to the people I serve everyday and see if they think anything is being wasted. . . tell it to the seven track teams and 300+ kids I've coached over the years and see if they think I'm wasting anything. . . tell it to the youth who know how much I adore them and see if they think I'm wasting anything.  . . tell it to Noah and Anna, the two I gave birth to and see if they think I'm wasting anything. . .

Overachiever--- NOT!
Busy, crazy, fidget who can't sit still, passionate, driven, fun loving, laughter producing, silly, overbooked. . . YES!  And loving it most days!  Thanks be to God!

There's a Light. . .

To contact us Click HERE
I posted this picture of my daughter on Facebook this morning and one of my friends, who has known my girl since she was born, said how beautiful she is and that there is a light that shines in her.

Well, that got me thinking about the light that shines within us. . . at our baptism we are charged with the task to "let our light so shine before others" so that the world may see Christ at work in us and in the world. Is that what my friend sees in my daughter?  Is that what I see when I look out into the congregation on a Sunday morning and I see eyes filled with tears of joy, smiles pasted on happy faces, looks of yearning to hear more and more about God's love and mercy? Is that what I see in our small group when sisters and brothers in faith encourage one another and support one another on this journey?  I believe it is.

One thing I know about this light that shines within us is that it isn't "us."  When we are plugged in to the source of our hope and strength, something is exuded from our faces. . . our lives.  What people see in us is actually the light of Christ shining through.  They often mistake it for "us" rather than what it really is. . . the light that shines through all darkness, Jesus our Lord.  This light can attract others to us. . . it can draw them our way.  We must always remember that it is not to "us" that they are being drawn, lest we begin to rely on that kind of affirmation, but it is to the One who gives the light and who is the light.  That light is very beautiful indeed!  It is something we notice almost right away in each other if we are in tune with the Spirit. . . we also feel it within ourselves as it seems that love will ooze right out of us onto those we meet.  That's because we see Christ in them. . . we see them as God sees them. . . and we become the ones who share God's love with the world.  Just like the light is not ours, so the love is not ours. . . it comes from God and flows through us to others.

May you be light to the world just like my little sunshine girl!  May your heart be wide open to love others the way that God has first loved you.  May you be blessed by the fullness of Christ Jesus in your heart and mind and soul and spirit.

This is What Beauty Looks Like. . .

I have had some pretty amazing and humbling moments in ministry.  Moments when the precious people I serve in the name of Christ let me "in" to their grief, sorrow, pain, and joy.  One day a number of years ago it was a dear lady who knew she had breast cancer and was keeping it to herself (and her husband) because she didn't want to disrupt her family's life.  It got to be too much to handle alone, her faith was faltering, and in she walked through the door of my office.  I knew immediately that something was wrong, my first instinct being concern for one of her beautiful daughters.  When I tell you that she ended up as a heap of tears in my lap that may sound very, very strange.  But that's what happened and it was not weird or awkward one bit.  We sat there woman to woman and cried together, no words could express the fear and grief.  No words could express the presence of the Holy Spirit.  I am fully and utterly aware that that moment would have NEVER happened with a male pastor and I am so deeply humbled that God made me a woman for just that moment.  I hope I never, ever forget it.  That was the beginning of an arduous journey for her and her family, and the opportunity for the communion of saints to pray when she was unable to utter a prayer on her own behalf.

Yesterday, God gifted me with yet another Holy Spirit moment.  I had the privilege of driving another precious person with the dread disease of cancer to the place where they offer wigs, hats and other things to cancer patients.  What a ministry!  The woman who fitted my friend with a wig suggested that she take the remaining hair that she had and cut it close to the scalp.  Her hair has been falling out in clumps as it does when chemotherapy ravages the body.  With a little gentle prodding, she assented to letting me cut her hair.  Words cannot describe the honor I felt (and still feel) about this moment.  She sat in front of my bathroom mirror and watched as I clipped her hair, touched her head, combed the loose hair out and dusted her off.   The Holy Spirit gave us one of the most intimate, grace-filled moments of my life.  (She gave me permission to write about it and said she was going to write about it in her journal as well.)

When another person allows us to serve them in such a deep and intimate way it is life transforming.  In the face of crisis it becomes a moment of grace.  To be allowed to come that close to another person in their dark time is a privilege that not many get to experience.  Pastors have an honored and privileged place in the lives of those they serve and it is not to be taken for granted.  Thank you Miss R. and Miss S. for trusting me with these moments.  I will never forget that gift you gave me!  These moments are what bond us together for life, they have shaped who I am, and I am so grateful that you have let me be a part of your journey!

Here is a picture of Miss S. with her new wig. . . I don't think she would like it if I posted the picture of her nearly shaved head even though it looked good!  She can pull it off because she is a true beauty!  Please take a look at her and see what beauty truly is. . . it's not a magazine cover, it's not a "head shot" in the sense of the modeling or acting industry. . . it is real life. . . it is real love. . . it is the image of a precious child of God.  My heavens you are beautiful Miss S.!

Love,
Your pastor and friend

A Letter to my goddaughter...
October 9, 2012
My Dearest Rose,
Before time gets away from me I want to write to you and reflect on your baptism. It is still fresh in my mind since it just happened two days ago on October 7th. It was a beautiful sunny day, a little chilly, but a perfect fall day. Everyone from the family gathered at the church in Monroeville where your aunt Amy (yep, t hat’s me) is the pastor. All of you sat in the front row of the church and another family filled the front row on the other side of the aisle as their baby was being baptized too. Your daddy looked so nice with a tie on that day! He was ready for his baptism as well. It is so neat that the two of your share the same baptismal anniversary. Every year the two of you can remember your special day together!
The time came for your baptism. Your cousin Noah was the acolyte that day, and so he poured the water into the font as I read the prayer that described how God used water to bring life and redemption to the world. First I baptized baby Sydney. She had lots of dark curly hair and I soaked her. She slept right through it! Then it was your turn. Uncle Jeff took you in his arms and held you over the font and I poured the water out of a seashell onto your head, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” You stared at me the whole time, never took your eyes off of me! It was like you were thinking to yourself, “This is the most amazing and wonderful thing I have every seen so far!” It was really precious. When I was done with the water, I kissed you on the forehead. I have NEVER done that to any other baby I’ve baptized. Ever. Of course, you are very special to me, my niece, my goddaughter.

Then I did the same for your daddy, he had water running down his face when it was all over. I guess I got a little wild with the water!
After that we moved forward to the altar as your cousin Anna sang the first verse of the baptismal hymn from the balcony. “I was there to hear your borning cry. I’ll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold.” Uncle Jeff was holding you and you held my index finger tightly in your little hand and wouldn’t let go. I sang the rest of the verse to you as the congregation joined in singing too. Mommy was almost in tears she loves you so much!
After the service we ate cake and went back to our house to eat and play with you and visit with one another. It was a wonderful day. A wonder-full day indeed! God is good and he loves you. I love you. We all love you, Rosebud!
Your loving godmother,
Aunt Amy

The BlackBerry 9000 Has a Name - the BlackBerry BOLD?!

To contact us Click HERE

The BlackBerry Bold is a series of BlackBerry phones that starts from the Bold 9000. Ideally, this was the first Bold of the 9000 series and from its success; it provided an advantage towards understanding the ultimate difference between the BlackBerry Curve and the Bold series. There are several features that came with this brand including the BlackBerry operating system 6 which was an advantage towards understanding the importance of upgraded software. This was the phone that provided proof on the facts that the newer the software, the faster was the loading power. The fact that controls this matter is based on the issuance of power and platform. This series of BlackBerry was the one that came with the considerations that led to the production of the recent models of the BlackBerry Bold phones.
The BlackBerry Bold 9000 is one of the best-looking phones that Research In Motion Inc has actually put out in the market. There were certain rumors that the chrome look was in particular borrowed from a different model, either way, it appears as if this phone may be larger than the Curve but still feels better on the users hands. The phone was said to be estimated to longer time in terms of durability compared to the Curve. The faux-leather backing shows that RIM came up with a new feel in relation to class and what people were initially used to owning.
The Bold 9000 has whatever connections for which you as the user would be looking. Whether you were looking for 3G, GPS and/or Wi-Fi, you will seemingly have got it. Although there were reviews that the phone had some glitches which were related to bad 3G difficulties, it was later found out the 3G capabilities worked out just fine. The BlackBerry maps that incorporate the GPS tracker also seem to work quite well. Don’t wonder why this phone finally got the name Bold because the whole idea was centered to the fact that there were some improvements that Research In Motion decided to undertake on this model.
The Battery life on this phone was seen as a champion because even with all the 3G browsing and emailing, at first the phone was found to endure eight good hours a day without suffering from any relapses or unnecessary shutdowns. The internet on the other hand was much better because of the operating system and the increased processor speed.

Applicability of Compact Digital Cameras in Day To Day Encounters

To contact us Click HERE

In international marketing the importance of compact digital cameras is far reaching. How can a marketer easily convince its customers to think and believe that its products are superior, without the clear display of magnificent digital cam photos? The visual tenet usually brings about reality and faith. Surely faith comes through seeing, and seeing alone. This is one of the competitive edges that have seen international marketers establish strongholds throughout the world. For websites, the compact digital cameras have really brought the idea home, making everything good in the digital camera era. Imagine an online web site without photos for emphasis. I guess this would be the dullest link to be visited. Digital cameras have really worked against this, so the clarity and quality of the photos have made it a home for many people and thus has boosted e-commerce throughout the globe. The video capability and enhancement of digital cameras in corroboration with the internet and wireless connectivity has proved to be magic in the communication industry. Actually, through the use of a digital camera one can easily see the other party in any part of the world, so enhancing communication, precision and the actual meaning of the intended message which cannot accurately be passed without the capability and proper usage of the video feature. Digital technology is fast taking over this twenty first century. The education and research field has greatly enhanced maximum utility from the digital camera; and this amazing feature has contributed to the telecommunication field. In national security, digital cameras have proved to be of long term benefit. For the security agencies in their various inquiries and pursuit into crime, digital technology has enabled them to gather photo evidence on top of video capability, which enables them to track evidence which can be used in a court of law to convict criminals. The contribution of the compact digital camera to the tourism industry can also not be turned down in this moving world.
